The first in HUD VAL FOR’s 2012 Concerts for Peace Series. An evening of varied entertainment featuring Gypsy Jazz, swing, blues and other acoustic music at Shadowcliff, a 19th century mansion on the Hudson River. Entertainment by the String Jazz Society (Paul Speziale, Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo; Nick Esposito, Guitar, Joseph M. Peterson, Upright Bass, Jay Erlich, Violin) with special guest Ron Giles, vocalist. String Jazz Society performances feature the Great American Songbook (George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Cole Porter, etc.) performed in the style of Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France during the 1930′s-1940′s. Also appearing is local singer/songwriter Michael Miller, performing original compositions, and selected covers.

Vernon L. DeFreese Sr.

PORSTMOUTH NH – Vernon L. DeFreese Sr. 80, of Portsmouth, formerly of Hillburn / Suffern, NY., died Saturday, Jan. 7 2012 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, with his family by his side. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950, and fought in the Korean War. He was awarded the Bronze Star with ‘V’(valor) device for his heroic actions on the battlefield. He left the Army in 1953, and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956, where he served as an air rescue flight crew member and a command post controller.
Upon retiring from the military in 1976, he went back to school and earned his degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1979. He retired and pursued his hobbies of golfing and fishing until his death.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 52 years, Velma Jean (Glover) DeFreese; Kay Moore (DeFreese) surviving sister, two sons, Vernon Jr. and his wife Karen, and Stanley and his wife, Cheryl Cook; a daughter, Lavinia Cole; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mary (Van Dunk) DeFreese; son James; five brothers; and four sisters.
There will be a memorial service prior to his burial at Arlington National Cemetery, May 14th 2012.
